The Professionals

James Procter at Progeny

The Professionals came to Western Australia to shoot from the east coast, and we made that simple. One team handled the camera package and the crew together, and built a set of short films around their people, the latest gear and the people who know how to use it, from a single point of contact.

CLIENT TESTIMONIAL

Raz and his team made shooting in WA from the east coast easy. We loved his offering of gear rental and production. It meant we had the latest equipment and people that knew how to use it. Raz has a great eye for light, storytelling and framing. The crew were a joy to be around. No egos. Just a team that genuinely wants the best ideas on film.

CASE STUDY

One team, camera to cut

The Professionals needed to film in Western Australia while based on the east coast. The usual way to do that is to book a kit house for the gear and a separate crew to shoot it, then manage the gap between them from thousands of kilometres away.

We are set up to remove that gap. Raz Studios rents the equipment and produces the work under one roof, so the same team that supplied the camera package also lit it, framed it and cut it. There was one conversation, not three, and the gear on the truck was the latest rather than whatever was left on the shelf.

The work was a series of short films, one for each person, and that format lives or dies on the shooting. A profile film is only as good as the eye behind the camera. That is the craft we lead with: light, framing and storytelling, and it is what the client noticed.

The other half of it was the crew. Interstate shoots run long and the days are full, so the temperament of the people on set matters as much as their skill. Ours turn up to put the best idea on film, without the egos that slow a set down.

Shooting interstate usually means chasing two or three suppliers: a kit house for the gear, a separate crew to point it, and a lot of hoping they meet in the middle on the day. We take that off the table. Raz Studios hires the equipment and produces the work, so The Professionals landed in Perth with a current camera package and a crew that knew it inside out, from one conversation rather than three.

The brief was a series of short profile films, one built around each person. That format only holds up when the shooting is honest: where the light falls, how tight the frame sits, when to hold a moment and when to cut. That is the part we care about most, so the films feel like the people in them rather than a row of talking heads.

It is full-service production in Perth, Western Australia the way we think it should run: the gear and the crew from one team, no second supplier, and people on set who turn up to make the best idea work rather than to protect their own. If you are shooting in WA from interstate, this is the model.
